Power station sizes explained: 300, 500, 1000 and 2000
Power stations are named by numbers, and the numbers mean two different things. A "1000" can refer to the battery in watt-hours (Wh) or to the output in watts (W). Mixing them up is the most common buying mistake.
A 2000 Wh power station and a 2000 W power station are different things
- Wh is the size of the battery. A 2,000 Wh unit holds enough energy to run a 100 W load for about 15 hours once you allow for losses.
- W is how much it can power at once. A 2,000 W unit can run a kettle, but a 2,000 Wh battery behind a 300 W inverter couldn't.
You need enough of both. Watts vs watt-hours explains the difference with examples.
What each size tends to suit
| Battery size | Typically suits |
|---|---|
| 300 to 600 Wh | Phones, lights, a laptop, a router, a speaker. A weekend of light camping or a short power cut. |
| about 1,000 Wh | A weekend with a laptop and lights, or a few hours of TV and a fridge in a power cut. See the camping examples. |
| about 2,000 Wh | A fridge running for a couple of days (see fridge runtimes), power tools, or a van or cabin with solar. |
| 3,000 Wh and above | Longer outages, heavier daily use, and setups that are meant to be expanded. |

Units with 2,000 W of output or more
These can run higher-wattage items, such as a kettle or some power tools. Output isn't the same as battery size, so check the capacity column too.
